JERA plans two 650 MW CCGT units at its Chita power plant (Japan)

JERA, the joint venture between the Japanese power utilities TEPCO and Chubu Electric, has submitted the primary environmental impact consideration document to the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (MITI), the Governor of Aichi Prefecture, the Mayor of Chita City, and the Mayor of Tokai City, as the company aims to build two new 650 MW CCGT units (units 7 and 8) at its Chita power plant in Aichi prefecture (Japan). The two LNG-fired power units would have a gross thermal efficiency of approximately 63%. The two units are expected to come online in August and December 2027, respectively. In addition, the company intends to decommission four LNG-to-power units totalling 2.3 GW in 2021 and one 854 MW LNG-to-power unit in 2026 at its Chita power plant.

Gas-fired capacity accounts for 18% of Japan’s installed capacity, with 61 GW (2019). More than 4 GW are under construction, and 11 GW under development.
