JERA makes FID on Blue Point ammonia production project (1.4 Mt/year)

Japanese JERA has made a final investment decision (FID) on its low-carbon ammonia production project Blue Point in Lousiana (United States). The US$4bn project is being developed in partnership with CF Industries Holdings (40%) and Mitsui (25%), with JERA (35%) planning to offtake the produced ammonia to supply markets in Europe, Asia, and other regions. The Blue Point facility will be powered by Entergy Louisiana (a subsidiary of Entergy Corporation) and is expected to annually produce approximately 1.4 Mt of ammonia produced from natural gas beginning in 2029. CCS technology is expected to be implemented to capture, transport, and store the CO2 generated during production.

In 2024, JERA entered into an agreement with CF Industries to develop a low-carbon ammonia production project. This agreement followed the tender process for the procurement of clean ammonia conducted by JERA in February 2022 and underscored progress JERA has been making toward replacing coal with ammonia at its Hekinan thermal power plant in Japan. The project aligns with JERA's "JERA Zero CO2 Emission 2050" initiative that aims to decarbonize its domestic and overseas operations.
