JERA commissions the 1 GW Taketoyo coal-fired plant in central Japan

Japanese company JERA, through its subsidiary JERA Power Taketoyo, has begun commercial operation of the 1 GW Taketoyo coal-fired power plant, located in the Chita district, Aichi prefecture, central Japan. The commissioned plant co-fires wood biomass fuel as well as coal in an effort to reduce CO2 emissions from the plant.

Amid growing energy insecurities, and in order to alleviate potential electricity crunches during the summer and winter, the Japanese government instructed officials in July 2022 to get 10 more units of thermal power plants ready for operations to ensure a stable power supply during peak periods. Japan also expressed its intention to restart 4 more nuclear reactors before the winter, in addition to the 5 units that are already operational. In May 2022, the G7 countries, which include Japan, had agreed to phase-out of coal-fired generation, but they did not set a specific date or year for doing so.

In 2021, coal still represented 25% of Japan’s installed capacity (89 GW) and 29% of its power generation (294 TWh).
