Japan Atomic Power Company (JAPC) has postponed the restart of the 1,060 MW Tokai-2 nuclear reactor for almost two years, as the completion schedule of improved safety measures has been changed from March 2021 to December 2022. After completing construction works, JAPC will have to receive the approval of local municipalities in Ibaraki prefecture to restart Tokai-2.
Tokai-2 was commissioned in 1978 and was offline since the Fukushima accident in March 2011. In September 2018, the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA, the Japanase nuclear regulator) approved the restart of the nuclear power plant, ruling that safety measures proposed by JAPC (including the construction of a sea wall to protect the power plant from tsunamis) would comply with revised regulations introduced in July 2013. The company plan to invest around JPY180bn (US$1.65bn) in additional safety measures at the power plant. In 2018, the NRA also extended the operating licence of the unit, which was due to expire in November 2018, for 20 years.
