Japan’s NRA approves 10-year life extension for Ohi 3 and 4 nuclear reactors

The Japanese Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) has approved a 10-year life extension for Units 3 and 4 of the Ohi nuclear power plant, operated by the Kansai Electric Power Company (KEPCO) and located in the Fukui Prefecture (central Japan).

The two reactors (1.1 GW each) both began operations over 30 years ago, in 1991 and 1993 respectively. Following the approval, they are now allowed to operate for up to 40 years, until 2031 and 2033. Units 1 and 2 of the nuclear plant (also 1.1 GW each) were decommissioned in 2018.

It is the first time that the NRA approved a long-term facility management plan based on the green transformation law, which was enacted in 2023 and should be in full effect in June 2025. Under the law, operators must draw up management plans according to reactor deterioration levels and undergo NRA screenings every 10 years after reactors mark 30 years since the start of operations.
