Japan’s JFE wins EPCC contract for a 3 Mt/year LNG terminal in Taiwan

The Japanese company JFE Engineering Corporation has won a JPY30bn (US$230m) engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning (EPCC) contract for a 3 Mt/year LNG receiving terminal currently being developed by the Taiwan state-owned utility CPC.

Under the contract, JFE Engineering Corporation will build an LNG receiving facility located 1.2 km offshore from the coast at the island’s third LNG regasification terminal, currently under construction in the Kwun Tong Industrial Zone, Taoyuan City, northern Taiwan.

CPC owns the country’s two existing LNG terminals, Yong-An (10.5 Mt/year) and Taichung (5 Mt/year). As of end-2021, Taiwan had a total regasification capacity of 15.5 Mt/year. The island imported nearly 26 bcm of LNG in 2021 (100% of its gas imports).
