Japan's JERA agrees to buy 1.6 GW of thermal plants from Stonepeak (US)

JERA has entered into an agreement to acquire a 1,633 MW thermal power portfolio in New England (United States) from Stonepeak. The portfolio consists of four thermal power plants, namely Canal 1 (566 MW, oil-fired), Canal 2 (559 MW, oil-fired) and Canal 3 (333 MW, gas-fired) in Sandwich, Massachusetts, and Bucksport (176 MW, gas-fired) in Bucksport, Maine. JERA will use the power plants to ensure grid stability and provide power to the New England market in high demand periods, supporting the company's renewable development plans.

The US installed power capacity amounts to 1 269 GW (end of 2021). It is dominated by gas (44%) and coal (18%). Renewables account for 28% (including 10% wind, 8% hydropower and 8% solar) and nuclear for 8% of the total capacity.
