Japanese High Court in favour of Takahama nuclear reactors restart

The Japanese High Court has overturned the March 2016 Otsu District Court decision, which ordered the shut-down of units 3 and 4 at Takahama nuclear power plant. The Takahama NPP is owned by the Japanese power utility Kansai Electric and features two 830 MW reactors, Takahama 3 and 4.

Following the Fukushima accident, all undamaged nuclear reactors were placed offline for safety controls. Before the accident, there were 54 reactors spread over 17 plants. Takahama 3 was temporarily restarted in January 2016 by Kansai Electric, and Takahama 4 got NRA's approval and was expected to restart in February 2016. However, in March 2016, the Otsu District Court (Shiga prefecture) ordered the shut-down of Takahama 3 and 4.

The latest High Court ruling is positive for Kansai Electric but the next steps are still uncertain. The company estimates that it can save US$63m/month once it restarts both reactors.

In the wake of the Court's decision, Kansai Electric published a notice of revision of its financial forecasts for 2016 as of March 2017. The company published a revised net income figure which amounted Yen133bn (US$1.2bn) in 2016.
