Japanese high court dismisses request to shut Ikata-3 nuclear reactor

The Yamaguchi District Court of Japan has rejected a lawsuit by residents requesting to shut down Shikoku Electric's 890 MW Ikata-3 nuclear reactor. The reactor was shut down in the wake of the Fukushima disaster in March 2011, restarted in early August 2016 and resumed commercial operations in September 2016. The Hiroshima High Court order to shut it down in September 2017 but the order was lifted in September 2018 and the reactor restarted in October 2018.

So far, 9 of the 39 of Japan's nuclear reactors have been put in compliance with NRA's nuclear safety rules that took effect in 2013 and are currently in operation. The operating reactors are: Sendai-1 and 2 (876 MW each), Genkai-3 and 4 (1,127 MW each) by Kyushu Electric; Ikata-3 (846 MW) by Shikoku Electric; Takahama-3 and 4 (830 MW each) and Ohi-3 and 4 (1,127 MW) by Kansai Electric. Another 16 reactors have applied to restart. Ikata-1 and Ikata-2 (both 538 MW) have been offline since 2016 and 2018, respectively.
