Japanese companies Tokyo Gas and Kyushu Electric Power have set a 50-50 joint venture (JV) called Chiba Sodegaura Power to develop a 2 GW gas turbine combined cycle power plant in Sodegaura, Chiba (Japan). The power plant will be fueled by LNG and will be located at an unused industrial site owned by Idemitsu Kosan. Construction of the facility can be expected to kick off between 2020-2024 (after the final investment decision is taken).
This power plant will replace the companies' scrapped plans to build a 2 GW coal-fired power plant on the same site. In February 2019, the three companies announced they would no longer build the coal-fired plant due to Japan's Energy Conservation Act, which requires a power producer to achieve at least 44% generating efficiency by 2030, while the ultra super-critical (USC) technology proposed for the project would have a 40% efficiency only. It was still at the planning stage and did not past the feasibility study phase.
