Japan strengthens its relations with Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan

Japan is strengthening its relationships with Central Asia with two series of deals in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Japan and Turkmenistan have signed deals worth more than US$18bn in the chemicals sector and power plant construction. Japanese group Sumitomo will build a 400 MW gas-fired simple-cycle power project in Turkmenistan under a US$300m construction contract. The main equipment for the plant (gas turbine, power generators) will be supplied by Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS).

In addition, Japan has signed more than US$8.5bn of agreements with Uzbekistan, to explore new hydrocarbon reserves in the central Asian country (Japan will finance around US$5bn). Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) and Uzbekistan's state-owned oil and gas company Uzbekneftegaz will jointly explore new hydrocarbon reserves, in order to increase gas production. Japanese companies will also modernise a heating power plant (CHP plant) in Tashkent.
