A Japanese consultative committee has backed governmental plans to reach a share of nuclear power of 20% to 22% in the Japanese power mix by 2030. The target had been unveiled in April 2015 and renewable generation would account for 22% to 24% of the power mix (from nearly 11% in March 2014), while coal would contribute by 26% to the power generation, from the current 30%. The plan will be open for consultation on 2 June 2015 and is expected to be formally approved by the Ministry of Trade in mid-July 2015. It would be revised every three years and energy mix targets could be changed if necessary.
Since the shut-down of nuclear power plants in 2011, the Japanese power sector has ramped up coal consumption. The incumbent government aims to restart nuclear reactors, a position which remains unpopular. The new nuclear strategy would however limit the share of nuclear by 2030, as nuclear contributed to about 30% of the power mix before 2011.
