Japan selects five "promising areas" for offshore wind off Hokkaido

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan have identified five "promising areas" suitable for the development of offshore wind projects off Hokkaido (northern Japan). The five sites, which would have grid connection capabilities, are located off the coast of Ishikari City, off the coast of Iwau and Minamishiribeshi districts, off Shimamaki, off Hiyama, and off Matsumae.

They add to the already identified five project areas, located in the Sea of Japan off the coast of Aomori Prefecture (north side and south side), off the coast of Yusa (Yamagata Prefecture), off the coast of Kujukuri (Chiba Prefecture), and off the coast of Isumi (Chiba Prefecture).

Japan aims to expand offshore wind energy capacity to 10 GW by 2030 and 30-45 GW by 2040, as part of the carbon neutrality target by 2050. At the end of 2021, Japan only had 61 MW of offshore wind installed capacity (but more than 4.4 GW for onshore wind).
