Japan Ministry of Energy expects to double its energy efficiency budget

Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced it is seeking to nearly double the budget for energy-saving measures. The METI is requesting Yen 242.9bn (US$2.3bn) for energy savings for the year 2016-17, starting in April, up from Yen 127.7bn (US$1.2) in 2014-15. Part of the requested budget will be used to help factories streamline manufacturing processes and support offices to install equipment with improved efficiency.

In addition to efforts on energy efficiency, the METI is seeking to set aside a Yen135.5bn (US$1.3bn) for the development of clean energy, including Yen 10bn (US$100m) to support surveys for geothermal power generation and Yen 4bn (US$40m) for a floating offshore wind project in Fukushima. Regarding hydrogen development, the METI is expecting to triple the budget to Yen 37.1bn (US$350m) to promote the use of fuel cells including residential fuel cells.
