The local government of the Niigata Prefecture (Japan) has approved the restart Units 6 and 7 at TEPCO's Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant, located in central Japan (Japanese Government press release, 14/11/2025). The approval allows TEPCO to proceed with its plans to restart reactors No. 6 and No. 7, the largest of the nuclear plant with a combined capacity of up to 2,710 MW.
Units 6 and 7, both 1,356 MW advanced boiling water reactors, began commercial operation in 1996 and 1997 respectively. All seven units at the plant were put offline following the 2007 Niigata-Chuetsu earthquake, which caused damage to the site, and unit 6 and 7 restarted in 2009, before being suspended again after the Fukushima disaster. TEPCO had applied to Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) for a restart as early as 2013.
