J-Power commissions the 2 GW Batang coal-fired power plant in Indonesia

The Japanese power utility J-Power has commissioned and started commercial operation of the 2 GW Batang coal-fired power plant, located in Batang, on the island of Java, Indonesia. The project, which will supply power to the Indonesian state-owned power utility PT PLN (Persero) is owned by a special purpose vehicle, PT Bhimasena Power Indonesia, controlled by J-Power (34%), the Japanese conglomerate Itochu Corporation (32%) and the Indonesian coal mining company Adaro (34%).

The Batang coal-fired plant utilises Indonesian sub-bituminous coal in two large boilers that use ultra-supercritical (USC) technology and is expected to contribute to the stable supply of electricity in Indonesia. The plant is the first public private partnership (PPP) project guaranteed by the Ministry of Finance of Indonesia (MoF) and the MoF-controlled Indonesian Infrastructure Guarantee Fund (IIGF).

In 2021, coal dominated Indonesia’s power mix with 39.5 GW (50%) and its power generation with 190 TWh (62%). The country is also the world’s first coal exporter and the third largest producer (592 Mt in 2021).
