J-Power buys 25% stake in 926 MW Westmoreland CCGT project (US)

Japanese energy group J-Power has acquired a 25% stake in Tenaska Pennsylvania Partners from US energy group Tenaska. Tenaska Pennsylvania Partners is the joint venture of Tenaska and Diamond Generating Corporation (fully-owned by Mitsubishi) developing the 926 MW Tenaska Westmoreland CCGT power project in South Huntingdon Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania (United States). The US$780m project entered construction in August 2016. It is expected to be commissioned in late 2018 and will supply electricity to PJM (Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland), the largest deregulated electricity market in the United States.

With this acquisition, which follows that of a 50% interest in Elwood Energy (1,350 MW Elwood gas-fired power plant in Will County, Illinois) in September 2016, J-Power strengthens its presence in the United States. The company holds stakes in 4.5 GW of coal- and gas-fired operational power plants in the United States, corresponding to an equity capacity of 1,785 MW. The 25% stake in the 926 MW Westmoreland project will add 232 MW to its portfolio. Overall, J-Power owns stakes in 20,855 MW worldwide (equity capacity of 6,677 MW), not including its 34% interest in the 2 GW Central Java coal-fired power project in Indonesia.
