Italy’s Terna plans to double power exchange capacity with Greece to 1 GW

The Italian power transmission system operator (TSO) Terna plans to invest €750m to double the power exchange capacity between Italy and Greece to 1 GW, and to facilitate a higher integration of renewables.  Construction work for the 500 MW project’s undersea cable will begin in 2023 and is expected to be commissioned in 2030. The new 200 km-long interconnection project is included by Terna in its development plan for the national electricity transmission grid, which plans €18bn in investments over the next 10 years.

In 2020, Italy’s electricity exports reached 7.6 TWh (against 40 TWh for electricity imports) and 35% of its exports were destined to Greece in 2020, which makes Greece Italy’s first power export partner, before Switzerland (25%) and France (15%).
