The Italian oil and gas company Eni has delivered the first commercial LNG cargo to the Piombino regasification terminal, located in the Italian province of Livorno and operated by Snam. The 90 mcm cargo was produced at the Sonatrach liquefaction plant in Betihoua, northern Algeria. The delivery marked the beginning of commercial operations for the Piombino LNG terminal, which has a total processing capacity of 5 bcm/year, corresponding to about 7% of Italy’s gas demand. A first non-commercial cargo was delivered from Egypt at the terminal in May 2023.
Eni has acquired regasification capacity at the Piombino terminal as part of its strategy to diversify LNG supplies to Italy and completely replace Russian gas by 2024-2025. The terminal hosts a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) that the Italian gas grid operator Snam purchased from Golar LNG in June 2022. The terminal was approved by the government of Tuscany in October 2022.
