Italy’s Enel sees its power generation decline by 9% in 2023

The Italian energy group Enel has released its operational results for 2023, posting a 9% decrease in total consolidated power generation to 207 TWh. In 2023, Enel's renewable power generation grew by nearly 13% to 127 TWh: the group generated 61 TWh from Hydro (+18%), 45 TWh from wind (+4.8%), 15 TWh from solar (+29%) and 6 TWh from geothermal (-2%). As for conventional generation (80 TWh, -30%), Enel produced 37 TWh from CCGT (-33%), 25 TWh from nuclear (-6.2%), 11 TWh from coal (-46%) and 8 TWh from oil and gas (-45%). The company generated 43 TWh in Italy (-12%, due to a 46% fall in coal-fired generation and a 14% drop in CCGT generation), 60 TWh in Spain and Portugal (-6.9%), 75 TWh in Latin America (-1.1%) and 2.2 TWh in the rest of Europe (-83%, due to the disposal of assets in Russia, Romania, and Greece).

Enel posted a nearly 4% decrease in total consolidated installed capacity, reaching 81.4 GW at the end of 2023. 55.5 GW of its capacity was renewables (+3.7%) while 26 GW was conventional (-17%). Enel added nearly 2.9 GW of new solar capacity and 1.15 GW of wind capacity in 2023, while it retired about 2 GW of coal, 1.9 GW of CCGT and 1.3 GW of oil and gas. The company had 26 GW in Italy (-1%), 21 GW in Spain and Portugal (-3.6%), 23 GW in Latin America (-5.9%) and only 4 MW in the rest of Europe.

In addition, Enel distributed 489 TWh of electricity in 2023 (-4%), including 214 TWh in Italy (-2.9%), to over 70 million end users (31.8 million of which in Italy). Meanwhile, the group sold 300.9 TWh of energy in 2023 (-6% compared to 2022). The group’s number of customers on the liberalised market decreased by 3% to 18.6 million, while its number of customers on the regulated market dipped by 2% to 36.4 million.
