Italy's Enel increases its revenue by 1/3 in 2021 thanks to renewables

The Italian energy group Enel (23.6% owned by the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance) has released its 2021 preliminary results, posting a nearly 34% growth in its revenues (up to €88.3bn) thanks to growth across business departments and a 4.1% increase in its EBITDA to €17.6bn. This strong growth in revenues was due to its Infrastructure and Networks activities (increasing demand for electricity boosting transported volumes), a higher renewable power generation, higher electricity sales especially in Italy and Latin America, as well as the sale of its stake in broadband network group Open Fiber.

Enel's electricity production rose by 7.5% to 223 TWh, including 48 TWh in Italy (+12%) and 175 TWh outside of Italy (+6.2%). The group distributed 510 TWh of electricity on its networks in 2021 (+5.2%), including 227 TWh in Italy (+5.8%) and 283.5 TWh outside of Italy (+4.7%). Finally, Enel sold 309 TWh of electricity in 2021 (+3.8%), including 93 TWh in Italy (+2.8%) and 217 TWh outside of Italy (+4.2%).
