Italy postpones electricity and gas market liberalisation to January 2022

During 2020 budget review, the Italian parliament has delayed for the fifth time the full liberalisation of its retail power and gas markets from June 2020 to January 2022. All customers - 22 million households and small businesses - will be affected by the end of the regulated market ("mercato tutelato").

The electricity market has been open to all professionals since 2004 and to all consumers since 2007; in 2018, the liberalised market accounted for 81% of the electricity market (206 TWh). The gas market has been opened progressively since 2000 and 86% of final sales were carried out on the liberalised market and 14% on the regulated market in 2018. Regulated electricity tariffs were initially expected to be removed in 2017 but the deadline was postponed by one year for the fourth time in August 2018 to July 2020 (same date planned for the end of regulated gas tariffs).
