Italy plans to install two FSRUs with a capacity of 10 bcm/year

Italy plans to instal two floating storage and regasification units (FSRU) with a combined capacity of 10 bcm/year to import liquefied natural gas (LNG). The two projects could be located in the Tyrrhenian Sea and, probably, in the Adriatic Sea. The Italian gas group Snam has been mandated by the government to negotiate the acquisition of an FSRU and the leasing of a second. The group estimates that Italy would need at least 3 years to fully replace Russian gas imports but 20 bcm/year could be replaced in the near to medium term using more LNG.

Earlier in March 2022, the Italian energy groups Sorgenia and Iren revived plans to build a 12 bcm/year LNG import terminal in the southern Italian port of Gioia Tauro. The project was initially developed by LNG MedGas, a consortium of Fingas (a joint venture of Sorgenia and Iren) (69.8%) and Medgas Italia (30.2%) and proposed in 2005. It had received approvals but had remained suspended so far. If accelerated, the project could be commissioning as soon as in 2026. In addition, Enel proposed to revive the Porto Empedocle LNG import project in Sicily, which had also secured approvals but remained suspended. The project, which could have a capacity of 8 bcm/year, could be operational by 2025.
