Italy launches €1.5bn rebate scheme in hopes to deploy 375 MW of solar PV

The Italian energy agency Gestore dei Servizi Energetici (GSE) has launched a €1.5bn rebate scheme aimed at helping farming businesses install rooftop PV systems on agricultural buildings.

The scheme is being financed with funds from the post-Covid 19 recovery fund. The Italian government hopes to deploy 375 MW of new solar PV capacity through this program. Interested developers may submit their project proposals from 27 September to 27 October 2022.

The Italian Ministry for Ecological Transition forecasted in May 2022 that the country could add 8 GW of renewables in 2022. In 2022, the government has already authorised 3 GW and 4 GW should receive an environmental impact assessment (EIA), which could allow them to participate in Italy’s renewable capacity auctions.

Italy added only about 1.5 GW of renewables in 2021, with 1,042 MW of solar, 405 MW of wind and 30 MW of geothermal. Renewables (including hydropower and excluding biomass) accounted for 54% of Italy's installed capacity in 2021, with 63.7 GW.
