Italy greenlights the Italy-Tunisia ELMED power interconnector project

The Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security has authorized the construction of the ELMED power interconnection, which will link Italy and Tunisia. The 600 MW electricity transmission line will feature a 200 km subsea high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable, installed at a maximum depth of 800 m. The total length of the interconnector will be 220 km.

The €850m project will be built by the Italian TSO Terna and the Tunisian TSO STEG. It will be the first electricity interconnection project between Europe and North Africa. In December 2022, the European Commission, through the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) financing programme, awarded €307m in funding for the ELMED project.
