Italy greenlights a 380 kV transmission line linking Sicily and Calabria

The Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) has authorised the construction of the 380 kV Bolano-Annunziata power transmission project, which will connect the Island of Sicily with Calabria, in southern Italy. The new infrastructure, developed by Italy’s power transmission system operator (TSO) Terna for €128m, will increase the interconnection capacity between Sicily and the mainland to up to 2 GW.

With the new transmission line, Sicily will be connected by three 380 kV power lines to the Italian mainland. Currently, Sicily and Calabria are connected by two 380 kV power lines: the Sorgente-Rizziconi connection (between Sicilia and Villafranca), which went into service in 2016, and the Bolano-Paradiso line, dating back to the 1980s.

Over 2023-2033, Terna plans to invest over €21bn in modernising and expanding the power grid and in energy transition. In the short term (2024-2028), the company will invest €16.5bn in its grid.
