Italy ends oil-fired generation and lowers output from coal-fired power plants

The Italy Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security has issued guidelines to the country’s power transmission system operator Terna, the Italian Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and Environment (ARERA), and Gestore dei Servizi Energetici (GSE), ordering the end of power generation from fuel oil and at the Monfalcone coal-fired power plant and mandated minimum coal-fired power generation as the country eases emergency measures implemented during the energy crisis.

As the country’s gas storage is at 82% capacity, and renewable energy production has increased, Italy is able to accelerate decarbonisation while ensuring energy security. A decline in electricity demand and a rise in hydropower generation have contributed to the reduced reliance on coal. However, Italy anticipates continued dependence on coal-fired generation in Sardinia beyond 2025, as the development of alternative energy sources progresses slowly on the island.
