Italy approves Terna’s €1.3bn Adriatic Link submarine power line

The Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security has authorized the development of the Adriatic Link, a 1 GW submarine power line that will connect the regions of Marche and Abruzzo in Italy. The €1.3bn project is being developed by the Italian power transmission system operator (TSO) Terna to increase exchange capacity between Italy’s Centre-South and Centre-North zones, and to strengthen the integration and transfer of energy produced by wind and photovoltaic plants in the South to consumption centres in the North.

The project consists of two submarine cables of approximately 210 km long, installed at a maximum depth of 100 m, and two underground cables of 40 km, with conversion stations to be built near existing electrical substations. Italian cabling giant Prysmian is set to deliver the high-voltage direct current bipolar cable line for the project, which will be completed in the first half of 2028.

As part of its Strategic Plan 2021-2025, Terna plans to invest €9.5bn in its domestic regulated activities, focusing on grid developments (59%), renewal and efficiency (27%), and defence (14%).
