The Italian companies New Developments and GR Value have launched a joint venture to develop two floating offshore wind projects in Italy totalling 2 GW. The Elymo project is a 1,020MW floating offshore wind park comprising 68 wind turbines in the Strait of Sicily, while the Apeneste project is a 915MW floating offshore wind park with 61 wind turbines in the southern Adriatic Sea. The two projects are now undergoing a preliminary environmental assessment by the Italian Ministry of Ecological Transition (MiTe) and relevant harbour master's offices.
In October 2022, AvenHexicon, a 50/50 joint venture between the Swedish energy company Hexicon and Italy’s Avapa Energy, also announced plans to develop two offshore wind projects totalling 2.5 GW in two areas of southern Italy, including a 1.35 GW project near Porto Torres, off the coast of Sardinia and another 1.2 GW park near Agrigento, off the coast of Sicily.
Italy aims to generate 55% of its total electricity generation from renewables by 2030. As of end-2021, Italy did not yet possess any operational offshore wind capacity but had more than 11 GW of onshore wind (9% of the country’s installed capacity and 7% of its power generation with 21 TWh).
