The Israeli Ministry of Environmental Protection has announced plans for a new climate law that will include a national target for greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction in Israel. The proposed bill specifies that GHG emissions will be reduced by 30% by 2030 (with 2015 as the reference year) and that the country will reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
The new law also includes the implementation of a climate cabinet, a climate council for policy-making, and an expert committee for providing information and reviews. The law will soon be presented to the Israeli Government and Parliament for approval. In May 2022, a previous climate law was approved by the government but was rejected by the Parliament.
In its updated NDC (2021), Israel’s emissions reduction target stood at 29% compared to 2015 (it was 26% in the country’s first NDC). Before the announcement of this new law, Israel had committed to cut emissions by at least 85% by 2050.
