Israel certifies a 68 bcm offshore gas discovery in the Katlan reservoir

The Israelian Ministry of Energy has announced that it has certified a natural gas discovery of about 68 bcm in the Katlan reservoir, located off the coast of Israel. The Ministry has officially classified the offshore natural gas reserve, explored by British-Greek oil and gas company Energean, as a discovery, paving the way for its development. This discovery is the first made in Israel since 2015. The Katlan gas field is currently the fourth largest in the country.

Energean intends to develop the Katlan field and make use of the existing infrastructure, including its floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) facility, used to extract natural gas from the Karish reservoir. Energean is already developing the Karish, Karish North and Tanin offshore reserves, as well as several blocks in the larger Tamar gas field. The company owns a 70% stake in the Karish and Tanin offshore gas fields, which have estimated resources of 98 bcm.

Overall, Israel has total proved gas reserves of about 538 bcm (2021). The country produced more than 16 bcm in 2021.
