Israel approves development of 250 MW of solar and storage in the Negev Desert

The Israeli Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has given its approval for the development of four solar power plants and storage facilities, totalling 250 MW, in southern Israel. The projects will be constructed in the Arava region of the Negev Desert, between the Ramon Airport and the Timna copper mine.

The first solar plant will include floating PV panels installed over purified waste reservoirs, as well as a ground-mounted PV and storage solutions. The second will be developed on public building rofftops, and the third will include only storage. The fourth solar PV site will be built on mines. It will also include an energy storage solution and possibly an agrivoltaics installation.

At the end of 2022, solar represented 21% of Israel’s total installed capacity with more than 4.4 GW but only 8% of its power generation with 6.2 TWh. The country currently has 1.2 GW of solar under development.
