Ireland selects Ørsted and ESB for a 900 MW offshore wind site

The Irish Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment has provisionally awarded development rights to the joint venture (JV) between Ørsted and Ireland’s ESB for the Tonn Nua offshore wind site in County Waterford, under Ireland’s second offshore wind auction (Ørsted press release, 26/11/2025).

This auction offers a partially indexed 20-year Contract for Difference (CfD), enabling the winning bidder to secure a seabed lease and grid connection. The CfD supports the development of a 900 MW fixed-bottom offshore wind park at Tonn Nua, with an awarded strike price of €98.7/MWh.

  • The contract will commence after commissioning, with the wind park expected to be operational by 1 January 2037.
  • Tonn Nua was the only site offered under the Offshore Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (ORESS).

Ørsted and ESB formed a 50/50 JV in 2023 to develop offshore wind projects along the Irish coast.
