Ireland plans to develop 37 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2050

Ireland’s Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Communications has launched the “Future Framework for Offshore Renewable Energy”, a long-term model to deliver 20GW of offshore wind by 2040 and at least 37GW in total by 2050. The framework includes 29 key actions to develop Ireland’s long-term, plan-led approach to offshore wind, while also exploring the potential to export excess renewable energy through increased interconnection. The updated Irish Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) targets are one of the key actions under the Offshore Wind Energy Programme, a system-wide plan developed by the Offshore Wind Delivery Taskforce to ensure a coordinated approach across government, agencies, and industry to maximise the economic benefits of offshore wind development. Under this plan, it is also anticipated the publication of a draft South Coast Designated Maritime Area Plan (DMAP) in early May 2024.

In August 2022, the government increased its 2030 offshore wind target from 5 GW to 7 GW, with the country having about 28 GW of wind capacity under development as of the end of 2022.
