Ireland identifies four areas for the development of offshore wind projects

Ireland's Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Communications has published its draft South Coast Designated Maritime Area Plan (DMAP), which identifies four proposed areas off the south coast of Ireland for offshore wind projects. The four wind zones, namely Tonn Nua and Lí Ban both off the coast of County Waterford, Manannán and Danú both off the south coast of County Wexford, are subject to a six-week public consultation.

The draft DMAP proposes that a first offshore wind project with a capacity of approximately 900 MW will be developed in Tonn Nua, and will aim for deployment by 2030.

Earlier in May 2024, Ireland’s Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Communications launched its “Future Framework for Offshore Renewable Energy”, a long-term model to deliver 20 GW of offshore wind by 2040 and at least 37 GW by 2050. The country only had about 25 MW of installed offshore wind capacity at the end of 2022 (stable in 2023 according to preliminary estimates), but 4.6 GW of onshore wind.
