Iraq’s West Qurna-1 oilfield, with PetroChina, aims for 670 kb/d by 2026

The operating authority of the West Qurna-1 oil field in Iraq has revealed plans to increase the oil field’s production capacity to 670 kb/d by 2026 (Iraqi News Agency press release, 20/11/2025).

The authority’s director stated that the development of West Qurna-1, the second-largest oil field in southern Iraq, began in 2010 in collaboration with ExxonMobil, with PetroChina continuing development in 2024 under the same terms. He explained that the oilfield’s current output has reached 600 kb/d, with plans to raise production to between 650 and 670 kb/d by 2026.

West Qurna-1, located about 50 km north-west of Basra, contains over 20 Gbl of potentially recoverable reserves and is an important part of Iraq’s oil infrastructure, according to the press release. As part of a plan to expand oil processing projects in Iraq and improve production efficiency, the Iraqi Oil Ministry recently inaugurated two new oil processing facilities at West Qurna-1, each with a capacity of 105 kb/d.
