Iraq signs deal with Siemens Energy to develop 14 GW of CCGT capacity

The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity has signed an agreement with the German group Siemens Energy to develop 14 GW of new gas-fired generation capacity in Iraq. The agreement, which marks the third phase of Iraq's energy partnership with Siemens, includes the construction of combined-cycle (CCGT) facilities, which will primarily utilise locally sourced natural gas, including gas currently flared during oil production.

In addition, Iraq and Siemens Energy signed agreements to renovate and upgrade the 340 MW Dibis gas-fired power plant and the Al-Musayyib thermal power plant (rehabilitation of existing units of 750 MW and addition of 150 MW).

In April 2025, the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity had signed a similar agreement with the US energy company GE Vernova for the development of 24 GW of new gas-fired power capacity in the country.

At the end of 2023, Iraq had a total installed capacity of 32 GW of which gas represented 66%, oil 28%, and hydro 6%.
