Iraq plans new refining investments, including a new 150 kb/d refinery

Iraq’s Ministry of Oil has announced that it will launch new refinery investment opportunities in the country, including the development of a new 150,000 bbl/d refinery in the Dhi Qar governorate (southern Iraq), as well as the construction of a second unit at the already existing 30,000 bbl/d Dhi Qar refinery, to expand its capacity by 70,000 bbl/d.

In addition, Iraq will offer new investment opportunities to increase the refining capacities at the 150,000 bbl/d Al-Amarah refinery in Maysan, the 100,000 bbl/d Kirkuk refinery, the 100,000 bbl/d Muthanna refinery and the 70,000 bbl/d Qayyarah refinery. A detailed scheduled of the proposed offers has not yet been communicated.

At the end of 2022, Iraq had 18 operational refineries, for a total nominal capacity of over 1 mb/d. The main operational refineries are Baiji North (140 kb/d, extended from 70 kb/d in 2021), Basra (140 kb/d), Daura (expanded to 210 kb/d in 2011), and Kalak (expanded to 100 kb/d in 2011).
