The Iraqi Ministry of Oil has signed a partnership agreement between Qatari QatarEnergy and French TotalEnergies to develop a 1.25 GW solar project linked to the Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP). The project would be equally owned by both companies, and it will consist of 2 million bifacial solar panels mounted on single-axis trackers to be installed in five 250 MW phases to come online between 2025 and 2027. The first 250 MW phase is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. Once completely operational, the solar project is expected to generate up to 1.25 GW of energy to power about 350,000 homes in Iraq’s Basra region (Southern Iraq). The deal is still subject to all relevant approvals.
Additionally, the Ministry also confirmed the progress of the Artawi Fields gas development project, also located in the Basra region. The first phase of the project will start soon with a capacity of 50 mcf/d (517 mcm/year) to contribute with the reduction of gas flaring and convert it into energy to support the electricity sector in the country. The project also expects to increase the field’s oil production capacity to 210 kb/d.
At the end of 2023, Iraqi had a total installed capacity of 32 GW, of which 66% was gas-based. Solar only represented 40 MW of installed capacity.
