Iraq inaugurates the 75 kb/d Lanaz refinery in the Kurdistan Region

The government of Iraq’s Kurdistan Autonomous Region has inaugurated the 75 kb/d Lanaz refinery, located near the city of Erbil, northern Iraq. The Lanaz refinery, initially built in 2008, has undergone various stages of development to increase production over the years, raising its production units from four to eight.

The refinery has also partnered with US companies UOP and Honeywell, allowing it to use newer technology to produce cleaner transportation fuels. In addition, the Lanaz refinery has the capacity to produce 5,000 tonnes of asphalt and 1.7m liters of gasoline per day.

At the end of 2021, Iraq had 16 refineries, for a total nominal capacity of 1 mb/d. The main refineries are Baiji (140 kb/d, extended from 70 kb/d in 2021), Basra (140 kb/d), Daura (expanded to 210 kb/d in 2011), and Kalak (expanded to 100 kb/d in 2011).
