The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity has awarded a consultancy contract to Masdar to build four solar projects in the country with a total capacity of 1 GW in the first stage. The projects, which are expected to be operational within 2-3 years, will be located in the provinces of Nineveh, Maysan, Dhi Qar and Alnbar.
Masdar, the renewables company owned by the Emirati sovereign wealth fund Mubadala, previoulsy won a contract in November 2021 to build 5 other solar projects in Iraq totalling 1 GW, following the strategic agreement signed in June 2021 with Iraq to develop solar projects with a total capacity of 2 GW.
Iraq has less than 220 MW of solar capacity (2021) but aims to raise its share to 20% of the power mix in the next few years. To do so, the country plans to develop 10 GW of solar capacity by 2025 in partnership with international companies. Iraq's electricity capacity has tripled since 2010, from 11.9 GW to 39.5 GW in 2021. Gas represents about 63% of Iraq's installed capacity, followed by oil (30%) and hydro (6%).
