Iraq authorises TotalEnergies to invest in 4 energy projects

The Iraqi government has approved an agreement signed in March 2021 between the country’s Ministry of Oil and TotalEnergies to develop four energy projects. The French oil and gas company will invest in processing units to capture associated gas from five oil fields in Basrah, namely Ratawi, West Qurna 2, Majnoon, Luhais and Tuba. The projects will have a capacity of 6.2 bcm/year split equally in two phases. In addition, Total will boost crude oil capacity at the Ratawi field from 60 kb/d to 200 kb/d. Finally, the major will finance a 1,000 MW solar power plant and the common seawater supply project (CSSP), which aims to desalinate seawater for injection into mature oil fields.

Iraq's electricity capacity has nearly tripled since 2010, from 12 GW to 39 GW in 2020. Gas represents about 60% of the capacity (63% in 2020, oil 30% and hydro 7%). Iraq has 200 MW of solar capacity (2020) but it aims to raise its share to 20% of the power mix in the next few years and to develop 10 GW of solar capacity by 2025 in partnership with international companies. The first step of the plan would be to develop a 750 MW solar plant.
