Iraq authorises TotalEnergies to build a 1 GW solar project

The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity has greenlighted a 1,000 MW solar PV project in Basra developed by TotalEnergies at the Artawi oil field. Earlier in June 2023, the country approved the development of a 750 MW solar power project, which will be built by the Chinese state-owned conglomerate Power Construction Corp of China (Power China) in the Al Muthanna Governorate (southern Iraq).

These projects are the latest in a series of initiatives announced by Iraq, which aims to reach 12 GW of renewable energy generation capacity by 2030. In 2022, Iraq notably awarded 1 GW of solar to Masdar (UAE) and 630 MW of solar to Chinese companies. As of end-2021, Iraq had 216 MW of solar installed capacity, representing less than 1% of its total installed capacity.
