Iraq authorises a 750 MW solar project to be developed by Power China

The Iraqi Government has authorised the development of a 750 MW solar power project which will be built by the Chinese state-owned conglomerate Power Construction Corp of China (Power China) in the Al Muthanna Governorate (southern Iraq). The project, which will developed in two phases (250 MW for the first phase), will require an investment of US$520m. In 2021, Power China had struck a deal with the Iraqi Government to develop 2 GW of solar capacity in the country.

The project is the latest in a series of initiatives announced by Iraq, which aims to reach 12 GW of renewable energy generation capacity by 2030. In 2022, Iraq notably awarded 1 GW of solar to the UAE’s Masdar and 630 MW of solar to Chinese companies. As of end-2021, Iraq had 216 MW of solar installed capacity, representing less than 1% of its total installed capacity.

In addition to the 750 MW solar project, the government of Iraq has simultaneously allocated US$417m to build a third offshore oil export pipeline with a capacity of 2 mb/d. The project will be developed by Iraq’s Basra Oil Company (BOC), which signed a contract with Royal Boskalis, a Dutch construction and maintenance company for the development of the new pipeline.
