Iraq approves 3.2 GW of new capacity

The Iraqi government has approved the construction of a power plant in the Southern Dhi Qar Governorate with a capacity of 3 GW. It will require an investment of US$3bn. In addition, the authorities have approved a 200 MW solar project in Karbala governorate.

In June 2022, the country awarded a consultancy contract to Masdar to build four solar projects in the country with a total capacity of 1 GW in the first stage. The projects, which are expected to be operational within 2-3 years, will be located in the provinces of Nineveh, Maysan, Dhi Qar and Alnbar.

Iraq has less than 220 MW of solar capacity (2021) but aims to raise its share to 20% of the power mix in the next few years. To do so, the country plans to develop 10 GW of solar capacity by 2025 in partnership with international companies. Iraq's electricity capacity has tripled since 2010, from 11.9 GW to 39.5 GW in 2021. Gas represents about 62% of Iraq's installed capacity, followed by oil (30%) and hydro (6%).
