Iraq announces completion of the Iraq-Jordan interconnection project

The Iraqi Government has announced the completion of a power interconnection project linking Iraq and Jordan, which runs between the regions of Al-Rutba (Iraq) and Al-Rishah (Jordan).

Iraq will be supplied with an initial capacity of 150 MW in the first phase of the project. Capacity will reach 500 MW in the second phase and 900 MW in the third phase. Construction of the project started in the two countries in October 2022. Iraq completed the 400/132/33 kV Risha Convertor Station for the project in late August 2023.

In June 2023, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries started building the electrical interconnection project with southern Iraq. The project, expected to be completed by late 2024, will provide around 500 MW of electric power to southern Iraq as a first stage. It is financed by the Qatar Fund for Development and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development.
