Iran plans to start 2nd nuclear unit in 2023 and 3rd unit in 2025

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) plans to commission the second unit of its Bushehr nuclear power plant within the next eight years (2023) and to start the third unit within two years after connecting the second reactor to the Iranian power transmission grid (2025). Iran currently has one operational nuclear reactor, a 915 MW (1,000 MW gross) PWR unit connected to the grid in 2011 and commissioned in 2013 (project built between 1974 and 1980 and resumed in 1992 after a cooperation agreement with Russia).

Iran plans to reach an installed nuclear capacity of 20 GW by 2020 and has already selected 16 sites for potential nuclear development. Ten sites are in the coastal areas of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman in the south of the country. In November 2014 Russia and Iran reached an agreement broadening their nuclear cooperation and paving the way for Russia to build eight new nuclear power plants in Iran. Four reactors would be built in Bushehr and four in another site, yet to be determined.
