The Iran-Oman gas interconnection project is gaining momentum

The National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) is ready to build the onshore section of the Iran-Oman natural gas pipeline project, which will stretch from Asalouyeh in the Persian Gulf (Iran) to Kuhmobarak in the Hormozgan Province (Iran) before connecting to the Sohar Port in Oman through a subsea pipeline.

The whole gas pipeline will be laid in Iranian and Omani territorial waters and circumvent the United Arab Emirates Border and link directly Iran with Oman. One third of the gas exported to Oman will be liquefied at the Qalhat LNG plant, while the remainder will be consumed locally.

The agreement for the construction of the 28 mcm/d (around 10.2 bcm/year) interconnection facility was signed in February 2017 between the two countries for an estimated cost of US$1.2bn. However, the joint venture is still at the first stages. Deliveries are expected to start in 2020 over a 15-year period and the pipeline will expand the current existing infrastructure by nearly 200 km.
