Iran inaugurates the 18.3 bcm/year South Pars phase 14 refinery

The Iranian government has inaugurated the South Pars phase 14 refinery, located near the city of Bandar Kangan in the Bushehr province (southern Iran), which has the capacity to produce 50 mcm/day (18.3 bcm/year) of methane gas for urban uses, as well as 1 Mt/year of LPG, 1 Mt/year of ethane, 75,000 bbl/d (27.4 mbl/year) of gas condensate and 146 kt/year of sulfur.

The refinery consists of three trains that have become operational in March 2022, November 2022 and January 2023 respectively. The project was developed by the National Iranian Oil Company and the Pars Oil and Gas Company. The refinery will process hydrocarbons from the South Pars gas field, which Iran shares with Qatar in the Persian Gulf water. The 9,700 km2 offshore field, of which 3,700 km2 are in Iran’s territorial waters, is divided into 24 standard phases of development in the first stage.

The South Pars Phase 14 development plan is divided into an onshore part, which includes refinery facilities, and an offshore part which consists of four gas platforms, 44 wells and two pipelines that transport gas from the offshore field to the facilities on land.

In 2021, Iran had announced its intention to increase the country’s refining capacity by more than 60%, from 2.2 mb/d to 3.5 mb/d by 2026 by upgrading existing refineries and commissioning several new ones.
