Iran commissions a 2nd train for the South Pars phase 14 refinery

The Iranian group Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC) has commissioned the second train of the South Pars phase 14 refinery, bringing the refining capacity of phase 14 to 28 mcm/day (10 bcm/year). The first train of phase 14 refinery, which is located near the city of Bandar Kangan, Bushehr province (southern Iran), has been operational since mid-March 2022.

The Phase 14 development is aimed at producing 56.6 mcm/day of rich gas, 75,000 bpd of gas condensate and 400 t/day of sulfur, as well as 1 Mt/year of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and 1 Mt/year of ethane to be fed to petrochemical plants. The refinery will process hydrocarbons from the South Pars gas field, which Iran shares with Qatar in the Persian Gulf water. The 9,700 km2 offshore field, of which 3,700 km2 are in Iran’s territorial waters, is divided into 24 standard phases of development in the first stage.

In addition, the Iranian Oil Ministry has announced it is planning to establish eight new petro-refineries in collaboration with the private sector, aiming to double production in the oil and gas sector’s downstream sector.

In 2021, Iran already announced its intention to increase the country’s refining capacity by more han 60%, from 2.2 mb/d to 3.5 mb/d by 2026 by upgrading existing refineries and commissioning several new ones.
